                 EXPECT "NEW" MOI UNIVERSITY

Moi University [PHOTO; Courtesy]
Moi University has a compelling motto: ‘Foundation of Knowledge’. Started over three decades ago with a population of only 83 students, the current student population of 43,000 attests to the fact that the university has made major contributions to Kenya’s human capital needs and is a key tributary to the global intellectual basin.
However, recent reports have it that the university has plunged in to an abyss of mismanagement. Like many local universities, Moi is limping along the road that could plunge the country into an intellectual apocalypse. But that need not be the case. The challenges public universities are facing present them with a window of opportunity to demonstrate there is nothing more practical than a good theory.
The financial crises, managerial conundrums of balancing academic and administrative interests, the human capital complexities and the student-society expectations, among others, have given dons sleepless nights. Recent reports show these challenges are getting the better side of our intellectual vanguards.
In his Oration Speech delivered on November 17, acting VC Laban Ayiro said the university is in a deep financial quagmire. Audits show the university may have lost up to Sh1 billion in questionable deals. It is shocking that the university operates 56 bank accounts which have been used to swindle it.
But this crisis offers an opportunity to turn the situation into a platform for intellectual splendour and societal nourishment.
I am excited by the possibility of the university leading innovation in this meta-field as it could provide answers to many other societal challenges Kenya faces.

THE CHURCH MUST GUIDE ITS FLOCK IN EVERY ELECTION

Politics is a dirty game and so the saying goes and this might be the sole reason why church leaders shy away from politics and fail to guide the children of God in making tough political decisions. Politics I say is not dirty since it is a fundamental building block of life, and therefore life is politics and politics is life. Even if it is dirty injecting hygiene in it is imperative.

With the prevailing political mood within the campus, as the church here exorcises demons, methinks the demon of political apathy within the church must top the list. The church is the conscience of the society and the religious organizations within the campus can be rightly discussed as the conscience of this campus. These organizations pray when things go wrong, somehow they basically pray for everything in this institutions but it becomes a contradiction when they fail to take charge when the opportunity to raise political leaders come.

Good people, of the church especially those on the leadership positions come and let us reason together. The chairperson of Christian Union, MUSDA and Catholic Students Association you have a large constituency that you head, and at least you stand for something good. Good people, you value virtues and moral values and that is why I think you should take a stand in this election.

Student’s governance is in dire need of a moral re-awakening and having the church as the moral custodian of the society the church has a big role to play. In the last national elections the church tried
putting a moral gauge on all the running mates of the presidential candidates and that made the election different. The church herein should also break from the cocoon of traditions and make the forthcoming MUSO election different.

Student leadership and politics in general is not meant for rebels neither for celebrities, it’s for people who understand the dynamics of society and can manipulate them for positive change. The church using its highly respected spectacles of virtues and moral values they can easily help identify capable leaders and lead the congregation accordingly in making a wise decision.

The church must add its input in the effort to reclaim the glory of our union. It must contribute to the debate of which philosophy and ideology that our union must be grounded on. It must be there as we try to regain our moral compass.

A lot has been said and done but the church can make the forthcoming election memorable for all the good reasons. Prayers alone are not enough and it is time the church decorate its faith with actions. It time to speak out before the Church’s voice is shut forever.

 WHAT FRESHERS MUST KNOW

Last week, Winnie, one of my classmates was removed from her room in Hostel K. She was dragged to the dirty field that is between Hostel J and studie, forced to face the admin and swear while shouting “26th SGC tuko pamoja” seventeen times while drinking a bitter liquid mixed with goat’s sperms. She suspected that the perpetrators were affiliated to one of the current shopkeepers (sorry, directors) who hails from her community and to whom she refused to vote for last semester.

I take this chance to welcome the innocent species of My University to this university with defects (sorry, I meant difference). Freshers karibuni to My University where you are expected to sleep on top of trees and attend classes. It is my time to orient you.

Let me start with the prefect body led by the head boy. Here, they are called SGC. They are chosen from the hungriest students and end up being shopkeepers. The head boy is called chairman. He is so powerful that he can make the university security officials to suspend me for writing this after which you can go on strike. He is called toothless dog or Mr. dog-hana Meno.

The one who gave you his number the other day is called Mr. Tight-ass (anavaanga tight shirts na tight jeans). He is the prefect in-charge of mwax and sups. He gave you his number during your orientation because that was the only way to kwachua as many freshers as possible. I hear he doesn’t pick calls unless u text him, “me ni Esther” or something that suggests that you belong to the female species. This semester is named after him (Mururu semester) because he made sure we come back so that his chips business thrives.

The prefect in-charge of money and shops is called Pesa Wale Nakula. Like him or not, you paid him sh.500 when you reported to this campus. He is the treasurer of the campus thieves. But I salute him for being the only director worth our votes. He is the one behind the return of the MUSO cyber cafe and wireless network around Soweto. Clap for him! Again! Thank you.

The head girl is the vice chair lady who would come to your room during her campaigns and ask you while holding you color, “utanivotia ama nikuchape kofi?” She is Get Rude Chemka. I once tried to date her and she was like ‘are you man enough?’ I still wonder whether she meant I go buy Viagra or atanichapa. Si angeishi tu huko Nyeri?

The only confused member among the SGC is called Viola YEGON. Her surname must be written in capital letters or else... She is the assistant prefect in-charge of nothing. (The other day I saw her at Hijaz Hotel with a very handsome mswahili boy. I was told he is her new boyfriend. Kumbe hata ladies hukwachua freshers? I wonder why she damped my friend Simon, the former assistant prefect). I am saying she is confused because she doesn’t as yet know how to steal our money na Simo hajamfunza.

Let us go to the classes where you find some ugly students named class-rapes. They are raped by the situation. They did not kwachua nor were they kwachuad. They don’t have boy/girlfriends. They chose to be class-rapes so that classmates can take their numbers and at least, text them “hi, daro imebounce ama?” Be kind to them, sawa? Very good!

And lastly, there is a place called exile. Don’t ask me where in main campus it is located. This is the place where your roommate will send you to when he is visited by his/her overnight partner. In the words of the late Kijana Wamalwa, you can spend the rest of the night puffing a cigarette outside, ama uende frakaz!

I have some sodas and cakes for you behind this wall, take only one of each and have a very good day.

   Is Moi campus clean
Moi University have adopted new strategy on cleaning its institution and its environs late this year under new leadership of Vice Chancellor Laban Ayiro to ensure conducive learning center.
The institution is known to be having poor sanitation record following poor services by the staff due lack of working equipment. The worse been the helping facilities within the campus such as student toilets, bathrooms, bushy areas and poor drainage system that cause flooding in Student Center.
The beauty of the institution is always weighed with its building structures, surrounding and the location. With no doubt the ragged land in Moi is an obstacle deny the institution the beauty it deserve.
Under the new leadership of Prof. Ayirowith his slogan Rapid Response Initiative, has kept both the staffs and the students on toes and responsible in carrying their activities and keeping the environment tidy. It is vivid that Prof. Ayiro is on point of leave the place better than you found it, he want to change the look of the campus under his tenure.
He is ensuring the land is leveled by grounding down the hills, and filling up the valleys. The ragged land has not only posed beauty challenge but security concern too. Everyone within Moi can bank this idea of Prof since it’s evident that change is already being experienced.
Tree is rain, and rain is food since it’s a way to reclaim land for agriculture but also to show signs of cool and beauty environment for learning. On Saturday Prof took the initiative to plant trees within the campus.
Hostels, highways and pathways is no longer the same. It’s no longer monkey’s business when it comes to clean environment. The odor smell in some of the hostel is a forgone story. The plumbing notice released from his office is the best example.
Moi Campus can now be ranked among the cleanest learning institution in Kenya this through the steps taken by the Prof. Ayiro as change is now experienced within the 21/2 months in office.
It’s now the time everyone to pull up their socks to ensure the University is not only known for producing qualified personnel to the world but the best clean Center for learning within East Africa region, it can be done,  cooperation is what is needed.

COMRADES DIVIDED OVER DEMO

Perhaps goons were excited by the academics Director – Jairo Moses’ announcement of a mother of all demonstrations on Monday 20th June. The objective being to pressurize for the release of missing marks and academic results of students especially from the schools of education and Arts and Social Sciences.

According to the information posted on his Face book timeline, Jairo announced that all classes would be suspended and all academic activities paralyzed forthwith until the demand are met. The message was received by comrades differently especially on the Facebook Page Real Comrades of Main Campus where it was shared and discussed extensively. The always united comrades fraternity got divided into pro demo and anti - demo with each pact trying to convince the neutral ones.

A group which tended to represent second years supported the demo terming that it would be as peaceful and objective as possible.
However, there was a twist hours later when an aspirant in the academics docket posted a screenshot of his chat with the Dean School of Arts and Social Sciences, where the dean assured that the transcripts would be printed by Monday. This meant that the demonstration would be unnecessary

The Secretary General to Moi University Education Students Association (MUESA) again posted a memo with an anti-demo message. He stated that he had met the classesreps from the school of education and resolved to use other means to get their marks apart from the demo. According to Ojwang’, the class reps meeting resolved to follow the marks from the Head of Departments and not from the streets.

Nobody knows which side is stronger but it’s a reality that we are being used for either good or bad. With the political temperatures rising, demos are inevitable but we must make our decisions wisely.

Inspiring to Rebrand Moi University by the new Vc

Yesterday marked another day in the history of Moi University that will forever be a point of reference with the generations to come. An event dubbed the Vice Chancellor’s Oration whose theme was “Rebranding Moi University: Choices and Responsibilities” saw to it the promising of change in our institution. In attendance were various stakeholders, professors, invited vice chancellors, principals of colleges, members of the clergy and the students. The chief guest, Dr. Matiang’i, was represented by Professor Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha who is the Chairman Commission for University Education.
Another key note speaker who was part of this great revolution was the governor’s representative, his deputy whose vibrance and dedication to the university is one of a kind. In his speech, he pointed out that our institution should focus on what we already have instead of coming up with many satellite campuses. He urged the leadership of the institution to be keen on the science courses like medicine and engineering which add value to the Republic of Kenya. Hailing from the city of champions, he urged us to be interested in athletics and produce athletes from our institution. He promised to keep working with the institution and support it in all ways.
His lordship the Bishop of the catholic Diocese of Eldoret, Bishop, Rev, Dr. Cornellius Korir urged everyone to maintain peace in our daily activities. The Chancellor of the University asked everyone to help out so as to make it a success in the rebranding of Moi University. The university council chair, Jenesio Kinyamario promised that the rebranding will see an upheaval that has never been witnessed before.
The Acting Vice Chancellor graced the day by promising a number of things. Some of which include; Full automation of services in the university which he said that will be done by end of January.
Refining the school’s infrastructure
Improving the community relations with the university
Working well with the suppliers and service providers
Having qualified academic staff
He was of the idea that it is better that we have a smaller university that produces quality rather than a big university that is of poor services. He promised to build an ultramodern theatre hall in honour of Prof CJ. Odhiambo who raises Moi Unversity’s flag high.
Notably, he recognised the non-teaching staff and promised to employ one Fransisca Chepkoech whose dedication in cleaning is one of kind yet she is still a casual worker. In the spirit of rebranding, he urged those getting doctorates to go out and make the name of Moi University known then come back later to teach what they have learnt out there. The students were reenergised and hoped that everything that has been said will come to pass.

GUSII STUDENT MEETING THAT DID NOT GO WELL

The Gusii students meeting took a chaotic and unexpected turn yesterday at Seminar Room 6 at 6:30pm thereabouts. The meeting meant to unite Moi university students from the Gusii community ended contrary to their expectations when it was disrupted at its climax, thus taking a dramatic end. This was when all those who have political ambitions were asked to make themselves known to members. In the process, some allegedly drunken comrades who might have belong to one aspirant created a fracas.
The master of the day then asked the various aspirants to control their people and stand but the members in the house were not ready for talks. The aspirants who were to fund the end of semester Gusii party did not take the floor to address that as the members were already riled up. Despite the need for some aspirants to talk, disagreement reigned. Meetings to remedy the situation were then held in an effort to avoid further disintegration of the Gusii community but they didn’t yield any fruit.
GUSA subscribers appealed to their leaders to define the next move for this undoubtedly large community. They agreed to take rapid action and come up with immediate solutions that will ensure the betterment of and peace in the Gusii students’ community.

Moi University Student found Planning to join ISIS.

The has been a lot of speculation on the security matters in universities especially Moi university in the recent past. This came after a some of the students of the institution were reported to have linked with the terror group.
Following this allegations, tension gripped the heart of the institution in consideration that there was similar scene in one of its branch in Garissa.
The administration had to take quick response so as to culminate the situation, the alleged students were from the school of Information Science in Moi main campus. It was ensured that relevant security personnel to be deployed, main gate to be fully secured, relocation of the stage, and sealing the open places.
This has worked in favor with plan of the institution since there has been no similar rumor.  With  new leadership currently in place who advocate for  Rapid Response Initiative learning has been peaceful.
But a scenario has emerged in Mombasa When a when a Moi University student was found planning to join terror group ISIS.

Hassan Kassim Hassan was apparently found with information related to the terror group in his computer and phone.
He was arrested and arraigned in a Mombasa court and was not allowed to respond to charges.
This has brought the attention of the Government since it has called upon the court to make the suspect be held for 15 days to allow them complete investigations
